Swimming & Diving Wraps Up Day One at CCSA Championships

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C.- The VMI men's and women's swimming teams have completed the first day of competition at the inaugural Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships. The men's team is in fourth place of the six competing teams through six events, while the women's team currently sits in 11th place of the 12 teams.

In the men's competition, College of Charleston leads the way with 251 points, just ahead of Davidson's total of 241. Gardner-Webb holds the third spot at 153, while the Keydets have totaled 99 points, just three points ahead of Florida A&M. Howard rounds out the standings with 73 points. On the women's side, Davidson leads the way with 221 points, Florida Gulf Coast is in second with 205 points and Gardner-Webb is third at 163. The Keydets (15 pts.) sit within striking distance of North Carolina A&T (32 pts.) and Radford (36 pts.).

The Keydet men saw their best finishes on the day in the three-meter diving event, as sophomore Jeff Turner (Arlington, Va.) placed second with a score of 152.05, while sophomore Corey Morgan (Roanoke, Va.) placed third with 138.05 pts.

Sophomore Will Rowcliffe (Falls Church, Va.) just missed the championship final in the 50 freestyle with a prelim time of 21.88, while his finals time of 21.70 would have placed him sixth had he qualified. Instead, he took top honors in the consolation final with a new career-best time, earning ninth-place points to top the Keydets' individual swimming efforts on the day.

Senior Chris Beyer (Reston, Va.) made consolation final in the 500 freestyle, where he swam a career-best time of 5:05.81. A pair of Keydets picked up points in the 200 IM, as senior Peter Borchelt (Evans, Ga.) and Trevor Stanco (Garden City, N.J.) swam career-best times of 2:06.10 and 2:07.78, respectively. Each of the team's relays placed sixth, with the 400 medley relay touching the wall at 3:48.36, while the 200 freestyle relay came in with a 1:30.83.

For the women, the team began the competition with an 11th place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, as freshman Chelsea Nugent (Glendale, Calif.), junior Stephanie Ortiz (Stafford, Va.), junior Ateala Tuff (Newnan, Ga.) and senior Alexa Bernas (Mechanicsville, Va.) turning in a time of 2:01.24. Freshman Brianna Allard (Fairfax, Va.) scored a 117.85 in the one-meter diving to round out the team's scoring on the day.

Nugent established a new school record in the 500 freestyle with her time of 5:43.27, though her time did not qualify her for the finals in the event.

The action continues on Friday at the Huntersville Aquatic Center.
