Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. ? The VMI men's soccer team posted a
2-2 tie Saturday afternoon against the Presbyterian College Blue Hose in a Big
South contest at Patchin Field.
Play was controlled in the middle third of the field for much of the
first half. Although Presbyterian outshot VMI 10-4 overall in the opening
period, each team managed just two shots on goal, as many of the visitors'
chances were from well outside the box.
VMI's best chance early on came in the 25th minute, when a
Brian Harding shot was turned away, while the Blue Hose forced VMI starting
goalkeeper Greg Hersh to make a pair of saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Neither team could get on the scoreboard, and the game was scoreless after one
half of play.
Presbyterian struck quickly in the second half. After a VMI turnover,
Presbyterian's Tommy Rodriguez made a run down the left sideline. The Blue Hose
player found forward Jonathan Edmonds in the middle of the field, about 15
yards out, and Edmonds blasted a shot into the upper corner of the net to give
the visiting squad a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute.
The Keydets answered in the 68th minute. Will Quarles found
Brian Harding with a quick pass behind the Blue Hose's back line, and Harding
found the back of the net from in close to knot the game at 1 apiece. The goal
was Harding's fourth of the season, and the assist marked Quarles' first point
of the 2008 campaign.
The visitors responded quickly, tallying the go-ahead goal just over five
minutes later. Off a free kick following a yellow card, the Blue Hose were able
to put a header on goal. VMI's Adrian Dominguez, who entered the game to begin
the second half, made the save but was unable to corral the rebound.
Presbyterian's Sam Eastridge took advantage, putting the ball past Dominguez to
give the Blue Hose a 2-1 advantage at 72:21.
For the second time in the match, the Keydets found themselves down a
goal, and once again, VMI responded. Off a run deep into Presbyterian
territory, Tony Nweke fired a pass into the box. The ball was tipped towards
the Presbyterian goal by another player, and Harding was there to put home the
rebound to tie the contest at 2. The goal was Harding's second of the game and
fifth of the season. The score came with just over four minutes remaining, and
the game remained tied headed into the first overtime.
The Keydets had a pair of quality chances in extra time, but could not
convert. Late in the first overtime period, off a free kick, Jacob MacIntyre
had a header attempt stopped by a leaping Blue Hose keeper. Then early in the
second overtime, a Keydet midfielder found Stephen Anderson on the near side of
the box. Anderson,
however, was deep in the box and just off the post and thus was forced to make
a sliding attempt. The shot ricocheted off the post, denying the senior the
winning goal.
For the game, the Blue Hose outshot the Keydets 29-16, but the visitors
held just an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal, as many of Presbyterian's
attempts were from well outside the box.
Presbyterian keeper William Redmond made five saves on the day, including
the save on MacIntyre's header in overtime, while VMI made nine saves during
today's contest. Starting netminder Hersh stopped a pair of shots, while
Dominguez turned away seven Blue Hose attempts.
With the tie, VMI is now 2-13-1, and 1-6-1 in Big South action.
Presbyterian now sits at 2-14-3, and 0-6-2 in the Big South.
VMI men's soccer will
return to action Thursday, as the Keydets take part in this year's Big South
Conference tournament. The tournament will be held in Conway,
S.C., and VMI will face top-seeded Winthrop Thursday at 2:30
p.m.
