HARRISONBURG, Va.- In their season-opening competition, the VMI men's swimming and diving team fell to Georgetown, 218-76, at JMU's Savage Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman James Goodwillie (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) and sophomore diver Austin Orchard (Alexandria, Va./Lake Braddock) each won events in their first collegiate meet. Goodwillie touched the wall in a time of 2:01.58 in the 200 individual medley, while Orchard won both the one-meter (224.70 pts.) and three-meter (229.65 pts.) diving events. Orchard's three-meter score established a new CCSA record, besting a score of 213.83 established by Davidson's Benjamin Lane last weekend.
Goodwillie also placed second in the 200 backstroke (2:00.14), while juniors Will Rowcliffe (Falls Church, Va./J.E.B. Stuart) and Justin Ferrell (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) also turned in second place showings in the 50 freestyle (22.55) and 100 freestyle (51.90), respectively.
Junior Jeff Turner (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) placed third in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events with identical 170.47 scores.
In the relays, the Keydets placed third in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relays. The team of Goodwillie, Stephen Russell, Tristan Euritt and Rowcliffe combined for a time of 1:45.64 in the medley event. The freestyle team of Rowcliffe, Ferrell, Benji Howard and Goodwillie swam a 1:33.50 in the freestyle relay.
The men's swimming and diving team returns to action in two weeks, traveling to Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Oct. 25.
