Van Es Named Big South Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Following a week that saw him hit .450 and help lead the 30th-ranked VMI baseball team to a 4-1 record, sophomore outfielder Eddie Van Es has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week. The award for Van Es is the first time in his career the Hampton, Va. native has been so honored by the Big South, and marks the first weekly award issued by the League this season to a VMI baseball player.

To begin the week, Van Es went 3-for-4 with a game-tying two-run home run in the sixth inning and an RBI triple in the eighth inning to extend the lead as the Keydets (16-4) defeated their highest-ranked opponent in school history, taking down tenth-ranked Auburn by a 7-3 count. Van Es then went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI in game two against Auburn, before walking twice and collecting an RBI in game one against CSU. He then had a pair of hits in each of the final two games against the Bucs, as he led the team offensively to a 4-1 record on the week. Van Es had a busy weekend in Charleston, making several fantastic defensive plays in rightfield, recording 15 putouts on the week while committing no errors.

On the week, Van Es collected nine hits in 20 at bats while drawing three walks, scoring five runs and driving in seven. He also slugged a team-best .850 thanks to three doubles, a triple and a home run, while sporting an on-base percentage of .522. The sophomore outfielder now leads the team with 20 RBI and ranks third on the team with a .343 batting average and .529 slugging percentage.

The Keydets next take the field on Wednesday evening, as they continue their nine-game road stretch with a trip to Norfolk to take on Old Dominion at 6 p.m.
