BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? Brandon Hynick and Ronny Woods combined for four RBI to help lead Birmingham-Southern (21-17, 9-3 Big South) to a 7-3 win over VMI (25-16, 6-9 Big South) at Striplin Field on Monday.
Hynick belted his 11th home run of the season in the first with Scott Billak on board to give BSC a 2-0 lead. Allen Aubin's RBI single in the second extended the lead to 3-0.
VMI put a single run on the board in the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-1. B.T. Good singled home Kelly Sweppenhiser, who led off the inning with a single.
Four runs crossed the plate in the fourth as BSC took a 7-1 advantage. Ronny Woods had a two-run single and two more runs scored on a throwing error.
The Keydets scored one in the seventh and ninth innings to close the afternoon's scoring. A.J. Yoder doubled and scored on a Shane Geisslinger sac-fly in the seventh. Geisslinger reached on an error in the ninth and scored on a Klint Reed RBI single.
"We got down early, and we had our chances, we just couldn't come up with the big hit when we needed it," said VMI head coach Marlin Ikenberry. "But still, if we catch the baseball, we're right in the ballgame. We left the bases loaded in the fifth and two on in the sixth, but tip your cap to their kid, he made some great pitches to get out of the jams. J.J. Hollenbeck was outstanding in relief, it's good to see him back healthy."
Blake Martin tossed 6.1 innings to earn the win and improve to 4-1. Martin struck out five while allowing two runs on four hits with three walks. Bailey Pratt worked the final 2.2 innings in relief, yielding one unearned run on one hit with a pair of strikeouts.
VMI starter Chris Henderson was saddled with the loss to fall to 1-1. Henderson gave up six run, three earned, on five hits with a strikeout in 3.2 innings. J.J. Hollenbeck scattered two hits with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings in relief.
VMI returns to action Friday afternoon, when they play game one of a three-game set at UNC Asheville at 3 p.m.
