Virginia Takes Mid-Week Contest Over Keydets, 5-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- Freshman Andrew Carraway surrendered only five hits in his first career start, earning his first collegiate win as Virginia scored a 5-0 in-state, non-conference win over VMI on Tuesday evening at Davenport Field.

The Cavaliers (32-9) took an early advantage off of Keydet starter Kevin Crum (3-1), who took the loss after allowing four runs on three hits, as five walks significantly hurt his cause. Crum was relieved by Ian Casher, who allowed a third inning run to bring the score to 5-0, while Richard Litwin pitched the final four innings for VMI (24-14), allowing only a single to Brandon Guyer in the seventh inning while striking out two.

Keydet leadoff man Chad Rice posted a pair of singles, as he joined Jacoby Fields, Klint Reed and B.T. Good as the only VMI players notch hits on the night. Carraway (1-0) was relieved after six innings by Pat McAnaney, who earned his first save of the season by working the final three innings, allowing only Good's bunt single in the seventh inning.

After Rice was left stranded at first base following his leadoff single in the first inning, Crum walked the first two batters he faced, before a Sean Doolittle sacrifice bunt moved each runner up a base. Guyer brought home the first run two batters later with his single through the left-side, while Tom Hagan's chopper down the right-field line put him on second base, while bringing in two more runs to make it 3-0 at the end of one inning.

Crum then escaped harm despite walking a pair in the second, as David Adams hit a bases-loaded shot to left field, however it was aimed directly at Fields and it ended the rally. However, after he led off the third inning with another walk to Guyer, he was lifted for Casher, who allowed a single up the middle that plated Guyer. Two batters later, a double by Beau Seabury brought home Hagan, bring the Cavalier advantage to 5-0.

Neither team would be able to make much noise after that, as Brandon Marsh reached second base in the fourth inning for UVA, the only Cavalier to see scoring position again for the rest of the contest. Litwin was brought into the game in the fifth, and retired the 12 of the 13 batters he faced, allowing only Guyer's single.

"Richard Litwin did a phenomenal job for us tonight," said VMI head coach Marlin Ikenberry. "He came out and competed and got the outs we asked him to get."

Good's seventh-inning single was followed by a throwing error on the second baseman, as he attempt at scooping the ball to first base with his glove ended up along the retaining wall, allowing Good to reach second base, the furthest any Keydet would reach all night.

Guyer and Hagan were the only Cavaliers to post multiple hits in the contest, with each accounting for two hits while combining for three runs scored and four RBI.

The Keydets return to action on Friday evening as they travel to Birmingham-Southern for a three-game Big South Conference series. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. EST on Friday evening.
