Box Score BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Quarterback Devin Campbell's five-yard touchdown pass to Duvaughn Flagner with 3:05 left rallied Gardner-Webb to a 35-31 win over VMI in Big South Football action Saturday afternoon at Spangler Stadium.
It marked the third straight close loss by the Keydets in as many weeks, and spoiled VMI's bid to get its first win over the Bulldogs in the series that began in 2003.
Gardner-Webb (6-2, 2-0 BSC) won its fourth straight game, its longest win streak since the end of 2004, while VMI fell to 1-8, 0-3 BSC.
VMI had taken a 31-28 lead at the 7:24 mark of the fourth quarter when Jonathan Wilson connected with freshman slotback
Tim Maypray on a 23-yard pass play and subsequent two-point conversion run by Wilson.
But the Bulldogs marched 80 yards in 12 plays for the game winner on the ensuing drive as Campbell tossed five of eight pass attempts for 80 yards on the drive including a key 31-yard hook-up with wide receiver Ricky Hernandez to the VMI 16 and a 15-yard pass play to Austin Gaines to the VMI 2 that set-up the go-ahead score, a timing pattern that Campbell floated to Flagner in the left corner of the endzone three plays later.
"We played with a lot of courage and heart," said head coach Jim Reid. "But at some point we need to finish with that courage and heart. I thought coming down here we would be tired, I was wrong. We played a very physical, hard game. Now we have a week off to recover from some of the injuries and regroup and get after it for the last two games."
The Bulldog attack was led by Campbell who completed 21 of 34 passes for 279 yards and three scores, but the sophomore tossed an interception that was taken back for a TD. Freshman running back David Montgomery led all ground gainers with 103 yards on 15 carries.
VMI was led on the ground by senior running back Sean Mizzer who gained 66 yards on 18 attempts and a touchdown. Wilson completed seven of 15 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown and was not intercepted.
The Bulldogs outgained the Keydets, 414-303, and ran 71 plays compared to VMI's 55 plays. VMI gained 196 on the ground and 107 through the air while the Bulldogs managed 128 yards rushing and 286 yards passing and held the time of possession advantage, 33:12 to 26:48.
VMI took the opening kickoff and moved 71 yards on 12 plays before settling for a Barrett Way 32-yard field goal into a brisk 30-mph wind. It was Way's sixth consecutive field goal and moved him to 8 for 10 on the year. Wilson sparked the drive with a 23-yard run on a fourth down to the GWU 19.
The Keydets extended the lead to 10-0 at the 4:39 mark of the opening period when Campbell sailed a pass into the arms of junior safety Marcus Brown who returned it 15 yards for a touchdown. It was VMI's sixth pass interception over the last three games.
The Bulldogs got on the board on a Montgomery 34-yard run at the 11:42 mark that capped a four-play, 45-yard drive that was set-up by field position aided by a short punt that was knocked down by heavy winds.
VMI assumed a 16-7 lead on its first drive of the second half, marching 82 yards in five plays and using a 54-yard run by Joey Robinson to the GWU 5 to set up a one-yard TD sneak by Wilson. Way's extra point sailed off the mark and the score remained 16-7.
Gardner-Webb responded with 21 unanswered points to take its first lead of the day. Kory Alston's four-yard TD reception from Campbell at the 7:14 mark of the third quarter cut it to 16-14, and Alston teamed up with Campbell again on a 44-yard scoring pass on the ensuing drive with 2:09 left in the third to go ahead, 21-16. The Bulldogs padded the lead when defensive tackle Billy Luther recovered a Mizzer fumble at the VMI 35 and raced to the endzone untouched to put GWU ahead, 28-16, as the game moved into the final quarter.
VMI responded with 14 straight points to retake the lead, converting a short field into a four-play, 49-yard scoring drive capped by a Mizzer one-yard TD run that was set up by a 44-yard pass play from Wilson to sophomore wideout Willie Bell to the GWU 2. The Keydets trailed 28-23 at the 9:01 mark before retaking the lead on Wilson's TD pass to Maypray that was set up one play before by a Keydet fumble receovery at the GWU 23.
Safety Keith Taylor and defensive tackle Eric Hall led the VMI tackle charts with nine stops each and Hall and tackle Jack Herzog each had a sack.
VMI takes an off-week next Saturday before returning to action Saturday, November 11 at The Citadel in the Military Classic of the South. Kickoff will be 2:00 p.m. Gardner-Webb will play at Charleston Southern next Saturday.
