HIGH POINT, N.C. - For the second straight game, High Pont University's (8-38, 3-14 BSC) starting pitcher allowed two earned runs and recorded a complete game against VMI (22-28, 3-17 BSC) as the Panthers pounded out 17 hits en route to their 11-2 victory over the Keydets Sunday afternoon in a Big South Conference match-up at George S. Erath Field.
HPU produced four multi-run innings in the game including the third when the Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead on three singles and an RBI double from left fielder Corey Stang.
VMI cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fifth inning as designated hitter Brandon Massenburg (Prince George, Va. / Prince George) led off the frame with a single, moved to second on catcher Robert Crumpler's (Suffolk, Va. / Nansemound, Suffolk) base hit, stole third and scored on an error during the next at-bat. Crumpler would go 2-for-3 in just his third start of the year behind the plate for the Keydets.
HPU answered right back in its half of the fifth as right fielder Chris Draska homered (2) with a runner on to put the Panthers up 5-1.
Right fielder Elliott Erbe (Portsmouth, Va. / Western Branch) led off the Keydets' sixth inning with a double and eventually came around to score to keep VMI in the contest at 5-2.
But HPU broke the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth and seventh as the Panthers posted three runs in each of the innings, highlighted by first baseman Seby Renta's (3) two-out seventh inning solo home run. Renta's sixth inning single extended his hitting streak to 13-games.
Panthers' centerfielder Chris Ramirez went 3-for-4 in the game with a double, a stolen base and two RBI's.
VMI starter Duke Acors (Richmond, Va. / Atlee) (2-8) was tagged for six earned runs in 5.1 innings as he took the loss.
Matt Kniginyzky (3-6) went the distance for HPU, walking just one batter as he earned the win.
The final game of the three game series between VMI and HPU is Monday at 1:00 p.m.
The Keydets will send freshman LHP Mike Anton (0-1, 4.99 ERA) to the hill, as the Panthers counter with senior RHP Phil Leake (1-3, 6.08 ERA).
