Keydet Baseball Drops Extra Inning Affair at UNC Asheville, 6-5

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - An 11th inning sacrifice fly from UNC Asheville's (17-18, 7-4 BSC) Ben Kerr gave the Bulldogs a 6-5 Big South Conference win over VMI baseball (19-19, 1-10 BSC) at Greenwood Field Saturday afternoon.

With the game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the 11th inning, UNCA loaded the bases with a single and two intentional walks before Kerr's sacrifice fly won the game.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after five innings before Keydet right fielder Elliott Erbe (Portsmouth, Va. / Western Branch) connected on a three-run home run (9) to tie the game at 3-3.

UNCA went ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Nick Jaska singled in Ben Padgett.

The Keydets tied the score in the eighth inning and took the lead 5-4 in the ninth after pinch-hitter Sean Seawell (Spotsylvania, Va. / Spotsylvania) drove home center fielder Brandon Massenburg (Prince George, Va. / Prince George), who reached on a bunt base hit.

But UNCA won it in the 11th frame to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Shortstop Matt Smith (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge), third baseman Kelly Sweppenhiser (Herndon, Pa. / Line Mountain) and Massenburg each had two hits, and Bulldog's designated hitter Steve Sherman went 2-for-4 with two RBI's.

UNCA reliever Aaron Rembert grabbed the win (5-4), as Keydet closer Jeff DeMara (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge) (3-3) suffered the loss.

Rembert's win tied a UNCA school record for career wins with 21.

Both clubs meet again Sunday afternoon for the final game of the three game series.

The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
