Seventh Inning Rally Gives VMI Baseball 6-2 Win Over Binghamton

LEXINGTON, Va. ? The VMI baseball team (14-7) scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and went on to knock off Binghamton University 6-2 Sunday afternoon at Patchin Field.

Left fielder Jacoby Fields (Prince George, Va. / Prince George) gave the Keydets their first lead off the day in the seventh inning with an RBI sacrifice fly. Two batters later shortstop Matt Smith (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bride) doubled home two more runs to put VMI up for good 5-2.

“Overall it was a great win,” VMI head baseball coach Marlin Ikenberry said. “We were focused and played extremely hard.”

VMI starter Jimmy Thoms (Newport News, Va. / Denbigh) was effective, allowing two runs and three hits over five innings.

Josh Owens (Sandston, Va. / Benedictine) (4-0) took the win in relief with three innings of one-hit ball, and closer Jeff DeMara (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge) recorded the final three outs in the ninth.

“Thoms did a great job going two times through the order,” Ikenberry added. “We got Josh (Owens) in there to give them a different look and (Jeff) DeMara sealed the deal.”

The Bearcats (4-7) scored a run in the second inning and a run in the third to take a 2-0 lead.

The Keydets tied the score at two in their half of the third inning on RBI's from catcher Sean Seawell (Spotsylvania, Va. / Spotsylvania) and Fields.

VMI stroked 15 hits in the game including four from right fielder Elliott Erbe (Portsmouth, Va. / Western Branch) and three from designated hitter Jonathan Hadra (Richmond, Va. / Atlee).

“Our offense did a nice job of putting pressure on their pitchers,” Ikenberry said. “We always had runners on.”

With Sunday's win, the Keydets took two of three from BU in the series.

VMI will host the Richmond Spiders on Wednesday at Patchin Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
