Strong Pitching From Richard Litwin Gives Keydets 6-2 Win Over Binghamton in Baseball

LEXINGTON, Va. ? Keydet starting pitcher Richard Litwin (Virginia Beach, Va. / Ocean Lakes) (1-0) allowed two runs over six innings as VMI baseball took a 6-2 decision over Binghamton University on Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.

Litwin recorded his first victory of the season, while J.J. Hollenbeck (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) and Jeff DeMara (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge) both came out of the bullpen and returned to action in the win after missing time due to injuries.

Hollenbeck threw two innings of one-hit ball in relief.

VMI (13-7) opened the scoring in the third inning when right fielder Elliott Erbe (Portsmouth, Va. / Western Branch) singled home a run and was followed by a two-run triple by left fielder Jacoby Fields (Prince George, Va. / Prince George), giving the Keydets a 3-0 lead.

After the Bearcats (4-6) cut the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning, VMI answered right back in the bottom of the inning as second baseman B.T. Good (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) connected on a two-run home run (2) to increase the Keydets' lead to 5-1.

Binghamton added its second run of the game in the top of the sixth on a solo home run from right fielder T.J. Kowalchuk.

VMI set the score at 6-2 in its half of the seventh inning when Good doubled, stole third base and scored on the ensuing wild throw. For the day, Good went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run, two RBI's, two runs scored and a stolen base.

“Our guys were very hungry after yesterday's loss,” Ikenberry said. “Rice and B.T. (Good) both had big days for us. With them on base a lot, it really helped our middle of the lineup hitters come through in the clutch.”

Third baseman Chad Rice (Grindstone, Pa. / Brownsville) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Erbe scored a run and drove in a run with two hits for the afternoon.

The rubber match of the series between BU and VMI is Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
