VMI Baseball Falls to Binghamton, 11-2

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Keydets' (12-7) nine-game home winning streak in baseball came to end on Friday as the Binghamton University dropped VMI 11-2 at Patchin Field.

The Keydets were held to just three hits on the day, with none of them coming after the fourth inning.

The Bearcats (4-5) jumped out on top 2-0 in the second inning after catcher Pat Haughie (1) connected for a two-run home run.

Left fielder Joe Costello (4) put BU up 3-0 with a leadoff homer in the top of the fourth.

The Keydets cut the lead to 3-2 in their half of the fourth as right fielder Elliott Erbe (Portsmouth, Va. / Western Branch) drove in the team's only two runs with a single.

The Bearcats broke the game wide open in the sixth inning when they plated four runs to go up 7-2.

BU added one run in the eighth inning and three more in the ninth and took game one of the three game series.

"I thought our kids lacked a little bit of focus today. We couldn't get into a rhythm at the plate or on the mound," VMI head baseball coach Marlin Ikenberry said. "A mark of a good team is how well you respond to getting beat."

Binghamton reliever Mike Weglinski (1-0) held the Keydets scoreless and hitless in his six inning of work to earn the win.

Andy Hutchings started for the Bearcats but left in the fourth inning due to an injury.

VMI starter Duke Acors (Richmond, Va. / Atlee) (2-3) struck out eight hitters over five innings but suffered the loss.

Both teams do it again Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.

LHP Richard Litwin (0-0, 3.44 ERA) throws for the Keydets while RHP JD Brink (0-0, 7.71 ERA) goes for Binghamton.

The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
