Macon, Ga. - The VMI Baseball team (2-3) won its second straight game, Sunday, over Mercer 6-0 as third baseman Kelly Sweepenhiser (Herndon, Pa. / Line Mountain) delivered two homeruns, four RBI's and two runs scored in the win at Claude Smith Field.
Keydet starting pitcher Jimmy Thoms (Newport News, Va. / Denbigh) (1-0) threw six scoreless innings to earn the victory before handing the ball over to Richard Litwin (Virginia Beach, Va. / Ocean Lakes )(1) who blanked the Bears (4-5) for the final three innings to record the save. Neither pitcher allowed a runner to reach third base.
Sweppenhiser's first homerun of the game came in the top of the first inning when he launched his first round tripper of the season, a three-run blast.
His second homerun was a solo shot in the fifth that made the score 4-0. Rightfielder Elliott Erbe (Portsmouth, Va. / Western Branch) knocked his second homerun in as many days when he connected for a solo homer in the sixth inning.
"Jimmy Thoms and Richard Litwin pitched very well today," VMI baseball head coach
Marlin Ikenberry said. "We had timely hitting by Swepp and Elliott. (The win) was an overall team effort."
The Keydets took two out of the three games against Mercer this weekend.
VMI's next game is Friday when they travel to Deland, Fla. to begin a three-game series with Stetson University. The scheduled start for game one is 7:00 p.m.
