LEXINGTON, Va. - The VMI baseball team (6-5) capped off a three game series sweep over Coppin State College Sunday afternoon by winning 16-3 over the Eagles at Patchin Field.
The Keydets scored five runs in the first inning and three more in the second to jump out to an early 8-1 lead.
Designated hitter Allan Wimmer (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) was once again a big offensive contributor for VMI, as he drove in three runs on his first home run of the year.
Shortstop Matt Smith (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge) also collected three RBI's with two hits including a double.
The Eagles committed eight errors in the game, which lead to seven unearned runs.
Starter Jimmy Thoms (Newport News, Va. / Denbigh) (2-0) struck out five and allowed two runs in five innings to earn the win.
For the series, VMI scored 48 runs and knocked 43 hits in its three victories against Coppin State College (0-3).
The Keydets return to Patchin Field Saturday to face Lafayette College for a doubleheader. Game time is 12:00 p.m.
