Swimming & Diving Finishes Third at Thomas Murphy Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md.- The VMI Swimming & Diving team took home a third place finish at the Thomas Murphy Invitational hosted by Loyola (Md.) this weekend.

The Keydets scored a convincing 227-88 victory over Northeast Conference rival Howard, however, fell by a 243-84 margin to Johns Hopkins and 221-106 to the host Greyhounds. Johns Hopkins won the Invitational, defeating each of their three opponents on the weekend.

Senior diver Matt Dowdy (Richmond, Va./James River) won a pair of events, the one-meter and three-meter competitions, with scores of 152.32 and 109.35, respectively. Senior Jim Driggs (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) turned in a second place finish in the 100m backstroke (:56.65), a fourth place finish in the 100m freestyle (:49.86) and a sixth place finish in the 50m freestyle (:22.75).

Driggs also swam on each of the Keydets' top freestyle relay teams that each finished in fourth place. Braden Orr (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley), Driggs, Hank Lee (Arlington, Va./Hargrave Military) and Dane Elles (Crosby, Texas/St. Thomas) swam a 1:31.09 in the 200m freestyle relay. The team of Driggs, Alex Rawling (Redondo Beach, Calif./Mira Costa), Kevin Vik (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) and Will Butt (Bedford, Va./Liberty) turned in a time of 7:45.58 in the 800m freestyle relay.

A new freshman record was established by the team of Lee, Chris Beyer (Reston, Va./Flint Hill), Jason Webb (Bowie, Md. /DeMatha Catholic) and Jake Jackson (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) in the 800m freestyle relay, when they swam a 7:55.61.

The Keydets return to action this weekend, when they travel to Davidson, N.C. to compete in the Davidson College Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin Friday afternoon at 10 a.m. and continue Saturday and Sunday.
