Lexington, Va. -- The VMI Keydets scored seven runs in the first two innings of en route to a 10-0 win over the Wofford Terriers on Sunday at Patchin Field. The contest was halted after the top of the seventh due to the ten-run mercy rule.
The Keydets (16-23, 10-11 SoCon) jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when senior Andy Barden (Chesterfield, Va. / Manchester) singled with an infield bunt to bring home freshman B.T. Good (Vienna, Va. / James Madison). VMI added another run in the inning on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Jon Wade (Marietta, Ga. / Harrison), scoring senior Justin Briggs (Rustburg, Va. / Rustburg) for a 2-0 advantage.
The lead grew in the second inning when an infield single from Briggs brought home sophomore Matt Smith (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge). Three batters later Wade stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and launched a grand slam over the left field wall to increase the VMI lead to 7-0.
While the Keydets were feasting at the plate, Wofford (8-31, 6-17 SoCon) was struggling. The Terriers left the bases loaded in the second, third and fourth innings as they failed to find away to score against VMI senior Phil Hendrix (Richmond, Va. / West Iredell, N.C.).
The Keydets added to their lead in the fourth on a single to right field from sophomore Elliott Erbe (Portsmouth, Va. / Western Branch), bringing Barden across home. Erbe also drove in VMI's final two runs on the day with a triple to center field in the sixth inning, scoring Barden and freshman Allan Wimmer (Vienna, Va. / James Madison).
After Wofford failed to score in the top of the seventh inning, the game was declared over due to the ten-run mercy rule.
On the mound, Hendrix allowed no runs on six hits while striking out 11 batters. Junior Keith Sturkie was given the loss for the Terriers
"It was a really good way to cap off the weekend," said VMI head coach Tom Slater. "We had a couple of starters out with injuries, and some other guys stepped it up. B.T. Good did a wonderful job this weekend both defensively and offensively, filling in for Jason Annis. Brandon Massenburg took a pitch off the hand and was unable to play today. Andy Barden caught three games of baseball in two days after Justin Briggs pulled his quads. To win two out of three with some regulars out of the lineup was outstanding."
VMI now travels to Appalachian State this weekend for a three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at noon. Wofford will host South Carolina on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
