Norfolk, Va. -- Freshman Allan Wimmer (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) batted 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored to lead the VMI Keydets to a 5-0 victory over the Norfolk State Spartans on Friday at Marty L. Miller Field in Norfolk, Va.
After two scoreless innings pitched from VMI's Duke Acors (Richmond, Va. / Atlee) and Norfolk State's Andrew Renshaw, the Keydets (2-5) jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning when Wimmer smacked a single, driving home freshman Brandon Massenburg (Prince George, Va. / Prince George), to take a 1-0 lead.
VMI added onto its lead in the top of the fifth with Wimmer driving in sophomore Matt Smith (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge) on a double off a Renshaw pitch. Senior Jason Annis (Placentia, Calif. / Valencia) followed with a single to bring Wimmer home, giving VMI a 3-0 advantage.
The Keydet lead continued to grow in the top of the sixth when sophomore Chris Brooks (Shepherdstown, W.Va. / Jefferson) brought senior Andy Barden (Chesterfield, Va. / Manchester) into score on a sacrifice fly to left field. VMI finished its scoring in the top of the eighth on a fielder's choice that resulted in a run from junior J.R. Royston (Stafford, Va. / Stafford).
On the mound, Acors (1-1) pitched six innings, allowing no runs and only two hits while striking out five Spartan batters. Renshaw (1-2) pitched five innings, giving up three runs on five hits, picking up the loss.
Eugene Goodson led Norfolk State at the plate with a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
VMI and Norfolk State will continue the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Marty L. Miller Field in Norfolk, Va.
