Radford, Va. -- The VMI swimming and diving team (5-5) finished its season this weekend by placing third out of five teams at the Southern States Championships held at Radford University's Dedmon Center Pool. The Keydets totaled 507 points on the weekend, 239 behind meet champion College of Charleston.
Junior diver Brent Banks (Annandale, Va./ W.T. Woodson) was VMI's top performer of the meet. Banks placed first in the one-meter diving event with a finals score of 329.50. He then placed third in the three-meter boards with a mark of 293.55.
Sophomore Will Butt (Bedford, Va./ Liberty) placed third in the 1,650-yard freestyle event, timing 17:53.73. He finished eighth in the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:10.57.
Senior Chris Lambert (Christiansburg, Va./ Christiansburg) placed third in the 200-yard backstroke, timing 2:05.48. He placed seventh in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 59.39 seconds. He placed eighth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:10.95.
Junior Ryan Beatley (Yorktown, Va./ Grafton) took third place in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:21.999 He took seventh place in the 100-yard breaststroke event with a finals time of 1:05.33.
Freshman Bart Payne (Mechanicsville, Va./ Atlee) posted a fourth place finish in the 200-yard butterfly, coming in at 2:03.63. He placed seventh in the 200-yard individual medley clocking a final time of 2:05.3.
Freshman Ken Rhee (Northridge, Calif./ Kennedy) posted a fourth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle event, clocking a time of 1:48.56.
Freshman Chris Eaton (River Forest, Ill./ River Forest) placed fifth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:13.40. He placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.47 seconds in the finals. He placed eighth in the 100-yard backstroke event with a time of 1:00.98.
The VMI relay teams placed second in two separate events. The 200-yard medley relay team finished with a time of 1:46.03. The 200-yard freestyle relay team touched the wall in 1:31.09.
