Keydets Fall to BSC in Men's Soccer, 4-3

Birmingham, Ala. ? After falling behind 3-1 to Birmingham-Southern College the VMI men's soccer team rallied back with two unanswered goals to tie the game at three but ultimately fell, Saturday, to the Panthers 4-3 in a Big South Conference affair at BSC Soccer Park.

BSC (9-4-3, 3-2-0 Big South) freshman Sven Simon's header from senior Thimo Langner's free kick in the 67th minute broke the 3-3 tie and sent the Keydets (4-13-0, 0-7-0 Big South) back to Lexington winless in conference play for 2003.

The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes of the contest thanks to two goals from junior Jamie Holmes. Both goals were headers from short distances in front - the first from Simon, the second off a deflected pass from Simon on a similar play.

VMI senior Drew Hardin (Hurst, Texas/ Richland) put the Keydets on the board in the 30th minute as a pinball pass across the box from sophomore Ryan Angus (Mechanicsville, Va./ Atlee) found freshman Lawton Way's (Richmond, Va./ Douglas) Freeman) give to Hardin and past BSC keeper Gavin Long.

Holmes added his third goal on a penalty kick in the 55th minute after teammate freshman Karim Dietz was brought down in the box.

VMI fought back scoring just 1:12 later when junior John Leacock (Roanoke, Va./ William Byrd) found the net on a pass from junior Kyle Clark (Emmaus, Pa./ Emmaus). The Keydets pinned the Panthers again in the 60th minute when freshman Charles Nweke (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cox) scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

The 4-3 score was indicative of the evenly-matched battle. The teams each recorded 20 shots and 11 on goal. Corner kicks were even at seven.
Douglas notched one more save (seven) than did Long (six), but BSC recorded a pair of team saves in the contest to win the category by a narrow 8-7 margin.

The Keydets wrap up their regular season on Sunday against the College of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, SC.

The following week VMI will travel to Radford, Va. to begin play in the Big South Conference Tournament.
