VMI Swimming & Diving Downs Howard, 112-94

Radford, Va. -- The VMI swimming and diving team (4-5) defeated Howard University, 112-94 on Saturday evening at Radford University's Dedmon Center Pool.

The Keydets took first place in five events.

Diver Brent Banks (Annandale, Va./ W.T. Woodson) won both diving events, scoring 101.30 on the one-meter boards and 103.50 on the three-meter event.

Freshman Bart Payne (Mechanicsville, Va./ Atlee) won the 1,000-yard freestyle event with a time of 11:04.26.

Sophomore Will Butt (Beford, Va./ Liberty) took top honors in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 5:24.50.

Junior Ryan Beatley (Grafton, Va./ Grafton) won the 200-yard breaststoke event with a time of 2:28.39.

"This was the meet that the team wanted to win more than any of the others," said head coach Bill Nicholson. "This is a good springboard for the Southern States Championships."

The Keydets will host the University of Charleston (W.Va.) at Cocke Hall Pool on February 1. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
