Col. Thomas S. Baur is beginning his seventh year as VMI's Faculty Chair of Athletics. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1975 with a B.S. degree in biology and commissioned in the United States Army. He served two years on active duty and four years in the reserves as an Infantry officer.

Following his active military duty he earned a Masters degree in Exercise Physiology from West Virginia University and a doctorate in the same field from Purdue University. He was employed by the Department of the Army as an exercise physiologist at the Soldiers Physical Fitness School at Ft. Harrison, Indiana for six years, before returning to VMI to teach in the biology department.

Baur is beginning his 23rd year on the VMI faculty, a tenure that has seen him awarded both the Thomas Jefferson and Distinguished Teaching Awards. In addition to his teaching duties, he has served as head of the Biology department, director of the Summer Transition Program, director of the Summer Session, Officer in Charge, Class Advisor, chairman of numerous committees, and as the Superintendent's Representative to the Honor Court. His wife Judy is an elementary physical education teacher. They have two sons, Steve and Dan.
