Mike Small

Mike Small

2015 was the first year as VMI's Volunteer Assistant Coach for former Richmond team captain Mike Small. Small served in various roles through the program, including infield instruction and team travel.

Small comes to VMI serving as a four-year starter for UR's program from 2011-14, including acting as the team captain from his middle infield positions. Small enjoyed his best season in 2012, when he started all 56 games and hit .296. He also was part of the UR Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, where he participated in monthly meetings to discuss various issues relevant to the Spiders' athletic program.

“We are very excited to have Mike on staff with us and a part of the VMI baseball family,” said former VMI head coach Marlin Ikenberry at the time of Small's appointment in August of 2014. “I enjoyed watching his career as a player. His passion and energy that he had as a player will be a great asset to him as a coach. He is well-respected as a leader, and came well recommended by UR volunteer assistant and former VMI great Tanner Biagini for this position.”

Small also worked at numerous camps throughout his tenure at UR, and had a brief stint with the Normal Cornbelters, an independent team in the Frontier League.
