Former VMI runner Dean Gonsalves has been named an assistant coach for VMI track and field, according to information released August 14, 2012.

Gonsalves returns to VMI following three years as a Keydet, where he ran among all three of the track and field/XC seasons at various points. His career was highlighted by his role in the world-leading 4X800-meter relay, which won an indoor IC4A title in 2011.

"We are glad to have Dean come aboard," said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. "His knowledge of the Institute and overall running savvy will help our program continue to move forward, and we believe he will grow into a strong coach."

Gonsalves also excelled in the middle-distance disciplines as a Keydet, finishing fifth in the indoor mile at the 2011 Big South meet, and placing sixth in the 800-meters at the following season's outdoor championships. He stepped up in distance on occasion as well, including a 32nd-place finish in the conference cross country ranks as a fifth-year senior. He graduated from the Institute in May of 2012.
