Kathleen Scales comes to VMI by way of Florida International University where she spent this past season as an athletic training intern for the football team. Among many responsibilities, her primary duties were to recognize and provide immediate care, management, and rehab of injuries to multiple members of the team. She also served as a mentor for students in the master’s athletic training program and a medical observer using DVSport software.
For the 2018-19 athletics season, Scales served as a graduate athletic training student at FIU and worked with the football and softball teams. During this time, she performed evaluations of injuries, administered preventative and rehab treatments and documented interactions. She also developed a cooperative working relationship with the sports medicine staff and coaches and educated athletes in the implementation of injury prevention programs.
In addition to her experience at the collegiate athletics level, Scales also spent time working at the Miami Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute during the summer of 2018 and performed athletic training duties at Homestead High School from January to May of 2018.
Scales earned her bachelor of science degree in sports and exercise science from the University of Central Florida in 2017 before going on to earn her master’s degree in athletic training from FIU in May 2019.
