Ryan King enters his third season as the team's Director of Player Development following his hire in June of 2022.
In this role, he assists in all aspects of the program including strength and conditioning, planning and running practices, recruiting, travel and many other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Working with the youngest team in the country during the 2022-23 season, the Keydets ranked first in the SoCon in free throw percentage at 76.6 percent and topped the league in offensive rebounding average at 10.9 per game. VMI also shot well from beyond the arc, ranking second in the conference in three-pointers made (309) and fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.351).
King came to VMI by way of Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia, where he has spent the last six years as an assistant coach on the post-grad boys basketball team.
At Hargrave, he was responsible for assisting with video coordination and preparing personnel scouting reports, providing on-court instruction to guards and wings, equipment management, contacting potential prospects and managing the recruiting database. Over his six years on the coaching staff at Hargrave, multiple athletes went on to earn scholarships at Power 5 or other Division I universities.
King also served as an admissions counselor during his time at Hargrave.
In 2018, he was the head coach of Team Felton 15U of the Amateur Athletic Union where he was responsible for all basketball operations and providing players with various drills and skill development.
From 2014-16, King served as a graduate assistant coach at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carolina, where he managed the recruiting database, assisted with schedule management, created scouting reports and film breakdown, and fundraising.
King holds a degree in business administration from Pfeiffer University (2007) and a bachelor's degree in marketing from Virginia Union University (2010). He went on to earn a master's degree in leadership from Pfeiffer in 2016.
