Luke Colwell enters his second season as an assistant coach after being hired as the program’s Director of Basketball Operations in June of 2022. In 2022-23, Colwell was one of the youngest DOBOs (Director of Basketball Operations) in the country and is currently one of the youngest assistant coaches.
 
Among many responsibilities, Colwell is directly involved with team travel, meal arrangements, practice preparation, social media, official visit logistics, and facilities. He also works closely as a liaison to the business office and all other departments on post. In addition to his operations responsibilities, Colwell scouts opponents, analyzes game film, coordinates recruiting efforts in Texas, and assists in player development.
 
He came to the Institute by way of the University of South Carolina where he served under head basketball coach Frank Martin for four years as a student manager and then one year as a graduate assistant coach.
 
As a 2021-22 grad assistant, Colwell served as the assistant video coordinator filming practice, cutting opponent film, and editing highlight tapes. He coded film, wrote scouting reports and organized databases to present to the team as it prepared for upcoming competition.
 
As a student manager from 2017-21, he was named the head manager for the 2020-21 season and the co-head manager for the two prior seasons. He was responsible for managing health and safety protocols during COVID, filming practices, creating scouting reports, assisting in player development and helping all travel/meal logistics.
 
While at South Carolina, Colwell helped with the development of numerous future pros including PJ Dozier, Frank Booker, Hassani Gravett, Chris Silva, Maik Kotsar, AJ Lawson, Justin Minaya, AJ Wilson, James Reese and Erik Stevenson.
 
Colwell graduated in May of 2021 from the University of South Carolina as a dual major in finance and marketing with a minor in sport and entertainment management. He received his MBA from South Carolina in August of 2023.
