2008: Had a strong season as a redshirt sophomore... Was 7-for-7 in save opportunities, notching 11 strikeouts and one walk in 12 innings in save situations...Overall, went 2-1 with seven saves and a 3.48 ERA...Led the team with 19 appearances, including two starts...In conference play, went 2-1 with four saves in nine appearances, posting a 2.67 ERA and 17 K's in 27 innings, with opponents hitting .224 against him...Earned a three-inning save, shutting out Charleston Southern (5/17) on two hits while striking out three...Picked up a win by working the final two innings in game one of a doubleheader against #15 Coastal Carolina (4/27), allowing only two hits...Threw a season-long 7.1 innings in relief in VMI's 16-inning win against Liberty (4/19), allowing one run on five hits, striking out five...Earned saves in back-to-back nights against JMU (4/15) and Norfolk State (4/16), working perfect ninth innings in each while striking out five...Picked up his third Big South save by working two innings while allowing one run on three hits at UNCA (4/12)...Earned his first win of the season by no-hitting Radford for the final six innings of a 3-2, 16-inning win (4/7); struck out six while allowing only a walk...Made his first appearance in over a year by striking out the lone batter he faced in game four at Auburn (3/9).
   
Summer:
Included on Baseball America’s College Summer League Top Prospects List for the Valley League...Led the Luray Wranglers to a sweep of Covington to win the 2008 Jim Lineweaver Cup, given to the Valley League Champions...Went 6-1 on the season for the Wranglers with a 1.88 ERA, striking out 49 batters while walking only 10... Allowed opponents to hit only .247 in 62.1 innings...In eight innings in the opening game of the Lineweaver Cup, allowed only two hits, picked off three runners and struck out 11 hitters in combining for a series-opening shutout....Helped Luray to a 37-15 record, leading the Wranglers to the fourth spot on www.PGCrosschecker.com’s Summer 16 list of the top teams across the country.

2007:
Saw action in only two contests before undergoing surgery...Took the loss at Florida after allowing six hits in 2.2 innings (2/11)...Suffered season-ending injury at Virginia (2/27), facing three batters in his second start of the year...Took a medical redshirt year.

2006: Became only the second Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in VMI history, joining fellow Herndon, Pa. native Kelly Sweppenhiser ‘06...Tied what was then the school record for wins by going 7-4 while also picking up two saves...Second on the team with 73.2 innings, ten starts, two saves and 4.40 ERA...Threw his first career complete game against Coastal Carolina (5/8) in a 2-0 loss to fellow freshman Bobby Gagg...Struck out a season-high six batters in a 10-1 victory over Birmingham-Southern (4/22), the program’s only win over the Panthers...Named to the College Baseball Foundation’s National Honor Roll after he picked up two saves and a win by closing out all three games against Lafayette (2/25-26), retiring 17 of the 19 batters he faced...Earned a win in his first collegiate appearance, allowing only one baserunner in 2.2 innings at Auburn (Feb. 4)...Won his first career start, allowing one run in 6.0 innings against Albany (3/4).
Summer: Made eight starts for the Front Royal (Va.) Cardinals of the Valley League, going 1-3... Struck out 33 batters in 40 innings, while opponents hit .277 against him.

High School: Three-year letterwinner as a pitcher at Line Mountain, the same high school is Keydet senior third baseman Kelly Sweppenhiser...Three-time TVL All-Star...As a senior, put up an ERA of 0.79 and 102 strikeouts in 71 innings...Also lettered two years in basketball.

Personal: Son of Jodi and James Smink...Played for the Line Mountain American Legion team...Majoring in psychology.
