Former Keydet catcher Red Dowdell starts his first year as Student Assistant Coach in 2016. Dowdell lettered two years with the Keydets, including 2013, when he hit .267 as a true freshman and started 27 games. He then missed the last six weeks of the 2014 season and all of 2015 due to recurring injuries, including his throwing shoulder.

Before coming to VMI, Dowdell was a four-year letterwinner at Yorktown HS and the 2012 National District Player of the Year. He is majoring in psychology with a minor in exercise science.
