The 2019-20 athletics season marks Karen Johnson's sixth year in the VMI athletic department, but she was no stranger to the Institute prior to her current role.
Johnson first joined VMI in March 2010 in the registrar’s office before moving to a full-time position as the Physics and Astronomy executive secretary in 2011. She would later become a buyer in the VMI Purchasing department in the fall of 2012 and worked there for five months. During her time in purchasing, Johnson was a procurement officer responsible for purchasing for 12 departments across post and the surplus property program.
Prior to joining the athletics department, Johnson served as a financial services specialist at the Center for Leadership and Ethics. She was responsible for preparing the Center's budget, monthly financial reporting and procuring all goods and services.
Prior to her time in Lexington, Johnson spent over 26 years with Mundet, Inc., a company headquartered in Colonial Heights. She was the Director of Human Resources for a decade, a position that included overseeing payroll and accounting information, and then was promoted to a supervisory position, that of Controller, where she oversaw the accounting and HR departments.
Johnson received an associate’s degree from Southern Virginia in 1976 and a bachelor’s degree from St. Leo University in 2003.
