VMI Wrestler Adam Britt Named Academic All-American
LEXINGTON, Va. -- VMI senior wrestler Adam Britt (Mechanicsville, Va./ Atlee) was named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America Men's At-Large Third Team on Tuesday. He was one of 43 selections representing sports other than baseball, football, basketball, soccer and track from schools in the United State that made the first, second and third teams. Only three of the student-athletes honored were wrestlers. The team was voted on by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
"This is truly a great honor," said Britt. "I'm very glad that I have been able to represent VMI in such a positive way."
Selected to the all-district time for the second consecutive season in May, Britt becomes VMI's first wrestler to earn this honor since Todd Arris in 1987.
Britt was selected for his excellence in the classroom and on the wrestling mat. Britt graduated last month from the Institute with a cumulative GPA of 3.5644 in civil engineering and was a VMI Distinguished Graduate. He graduated fourth in his class of 30 civil engineering majors. Britt made the Dean's List in all four of his years at VMI and made the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll in all three years that he was eligible to make the list.
Athletically, Britt enjoyed another fine season. With a 30-6 overall record, he was named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year. For the second consecutive year, he qualified for the NCAA Championships by winning the SoCon at his 157 lb. weight class. He also became VMI's all-time victory leader with 121 over his four years. Britt led the team in pins (8) and technical falls (6). He finished first at the Virginia Intercollegiate State Championships for the second time and the All-Academy Championships for the third time.
"This is an honor that is well deserved," said VMI head wrestling coach John Trudgeon. "Adam was every bit as driven academically as he was on the wrestling mat in his four years here. He is one of the most well-rounded student-athletes to come through our program in my 18 years here."
