Keydets blank Big Red in game two to split doubleheader

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Baseball split its doubleheader against Cornell on Saturday at Lamore Field at Gray-Minor Stadium.
 
The Keydets (16-3) stumbled in game one, 7-4, but bounced back in a big way in game two with an 8-0 shutout victory over the Big Red. VMI hits the 15-home win mark heading into Sunday's rubber match.
 
 
Game 1 Key Stats
- VMI totaled four runs off six hits.
- Grayson Fitzwater had a day at the dish, going three-for-three with two runs, a double, and a home run.
- Owen Prince accounted for a pair of hits.
- Keydet staffers combined for 10 strikeouts.
- Cole Raile hit a double and earned an RBI.
- Behind the plate, Raile caught four runners stealing.



 
Game 1 Scoring Summary
- Cornell struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning.
- VMI got one back in the fourth off an error that scored Fitzwater.
- The Big Red jumped out to a big lead after plating five in the fifth and sixth innings.
- The Keydets cut the deficit in the sixth with Fitzwater's solo shot to centerfield, followed by a Raile RBI double, who later scored on a wild pitch.

- Cole Raile had a pair of hits, including a home run, with two RBIs and three runs, to pair with two steals.
- Clark Driscoll shoved in his start, going 6.1 innings with no runs allowed and six strikeouts for his second win.

Game 2 Scoring Summary
- VMI kicked off the scoring this time around thanks to a Raile rocket over the scoreboard in the second inning.
- Fast forward to the sixth inning, the Keydets cleared the bases after the Big Red threw the ball away twice trying to get runners out at the plate, making it 4-0.
- Raile's RBI single and a bases-loaded hit by pitch by Thomas Conrad extended the lead to six in the seventh.
- VMI capped off the scoring in the eighth with a sacrifice fly from Bradley Garner and another bases-loaded hit by pitch, this time by Ayden Schnarrs, to total eight runs.
 
 
Next up for the Keydets
The Keydets eye the series dub on Sunday over the Big Red. The rubber match starts with an 11 a.m. first pitch. VMI will celebrate and honor its seven seniors during pregame.
