Comeback bid falls short at Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Down 44-32 at the break, the VMI basketball team rallied to pull ahead midway through the second half but could not quite finish as host Wofford earned an 82-76 win at home in Southern Conference action Wednesday night at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

VMI junior guard Tan Yildizoglu went off for a career-high 25 points with crafty drives to the basket for nine baskets in addition to going a perfect 7-7 from the charity stripe.  Fellow junior TJ Johnson earned 20 points on the night to log his 15th 20+ point game of the season.

Johnson also grabbed 10 boards for his eighth career double-double.

Game Summary
The Keydets (6-22, 1-14) jumped ahead of the Terriers (18-10, 10-5) early in the opening half and led by as many as 10 points twice midway through the period including a 24-14 lead at the 10:18 mark.

Wofford rallied to take the lead, 29-28, with a little over 6:00 before the half and gradually built a 12-point lead following a Jayden Tyler three going into the break.

VMI then countered early in the second half with drives to the hoop from Yildizoglu and Cal Liston before Walker Andrews nailed a three and was fouled in the process to put VMI down three, 51-48, with 11:45 to play. Yildizoglu then converted an And-1 on the ensuing possession to hit the free throw to tie the game at 51-51 with 11:19 left.

Kaden Stuckey – who finished with eight points – put VMI ahead by two at 53-51 with a basket under the hoop at the 10:42 mark.

The VMI lead was short-lived, however, as Kahmare Holmes hit a big three to rally the Terriers who eventually built a nine-point lead with 1:00 left to close out contest.
