ST. PAUL, Minn. – The VMI Water Polo Team opened the Macalester Invite on Saturday, falling to Augustana before defeating Carthage.

- Augustana struck first, but VMI responded with four straight goals
- Augustana would rally to tie the game and the teams traded goals in the third, heading to the fourth with VMI leading 8-7
- Despite extending the lead to two, VMI couldn't pull away and the thin bench (illness) caught up to the Keydets as they ultimately fell 11-12

Sydney Smith leads VMI with five goals;
Makynna Smith, Myler each score two
- The game started much like the first contest for VMI, as the Keydets jumped in front 4-1
- After pushing the lead to five, Carthage would cut the deficit to three going into the break (9-6)
- VMI controlled the pace in the third, taking an 11-7 lead to the final frame before adding four more scores
