Second-half rally falls short at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Despite outscoring host UNCG in the second half, the VMI basketball team fell by a 92-71 score to the Spartans in Southern Conference action Wednesday night at Bodford Arena in Greensboro, North Carolina.
 
The Keydets (6-20, 1-12) fell behind in the opening half as the Spartans (11-15, 7-6) pulled ahead with a dominant lead at halftime by a 47-20 count.
 
Game Summary
Without a single trey in the opening half, VMI sophomore guard Linus Holmstrom caught fire in the second half and hit all seven of his three-point attempts during the stanza to match his career high.
 
VMI outscored the Spartans by a 51-45 margin as the Keydets logged 12 three-pointers in the game after hitting just two in the first half. UNCG hit eight treys in the first half to yield their large advantage at the break and remained consistent in the second with six additional three-pointers.
 
After trailing by as many as 30 points early in the second half, the Keydets fought back in the second half and got within 15 points with 5:54 remaining after a Holmstrom three-pointer. UNCG immediately countered with a Clinton Efinda three-pointer on the other end and the Spartans continued to hit big shots in the final minutes to thwart VMI's comeback effort.

*UNCG hit 14 total threes during the game and finished above 50 percent from the field overall (32-62)
*Holmstrom finished with 23 points – just two away from his career high – by matching his career high with seven threes
*TJ Johnson finished with 20 points by hitting four treys and earned his seventh career double-double (20 pts, 10 rebounds)
*Freshman Mario Tatum, Jr. also finished in double digits with 10 on the night
*UNCG's KJ Younger and Clinton Efinda led the Spartans with 21 points apiece. Efinda came off the bench and finished with five three-pointers, missing just two attempts all night. Justin Neely and Lilian Marville also reached double figures with 16 points apiece
