VMI falls to the Bulldogs in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Looking to return the favor from a loss to The Citadel two weeks ago in Lexington, the VMI basketball team fell to the Bulldogs by an 80-56 count at McAlister Field House in Charleston, South Carolina.
 
Game Summary
The Keydets (6-16, 1-8) stuck with the Bulldogs (7-15, 4-5) during the opening half as the Keydets hit eight three-pointers in the first 20 minutes including a pair by freshman Mario Tatum, Jr.  Despite surrendering 14 points to The Citadel's Christian Moore in the first half, the Keydets trailed by just nine at 25-34 at the break.
 
AJ Clark cut the deficit to seven right off the bat with a breakaway layup off a Citadel turnover, but that was the closest VMI would get as the Bulldogs caught fire from beyond the arc to pull away. Braxton Williams hit a pair of treys before Carter Kingsbury hit another to lift The Citadel to a 17-point lead with 16:43 on the clock.
 
The Bulldogs ultimately built a 27-point lead late in the game for their fourth conference win of the season.
 
Key Stats
*TJ Johnson led VMI with 16 points on the night while Tatum also finished in double digits with 11. Johnson finished just two rebounds shy of a double-double
* Moore earned a game-high 20 points for the Bulldogs after hitting five threes during the contest
*Sola Adebisi finished with a double-double for the Bulldogs with 11 points and 12 rebounds
*Kingsbury nearly achieved a double-double as well with 16 points to go with seven assists
*VMI outscored the Bulldogs 24-20 in the paint
