VMI falls to Le Moyne in NEC opener

LEXINGTON, Va. – Playing in its first ever Northeast Conference game, the VMI lacrosse team fell by a close 10-9 score Saturday afternoon at Drill Field No. 2.

With the game tied at 6-6 at the half and VMI up 8-7 going into the final period, the Dolphins (4-2, 1-0) rallied to score three goals in the fourth quarter while holding VMI (6-2, 0-1) to one goal to escape Lexington with a 10-9 road victory over the Keydets.

Game Summary
The Keydets jumped to a quick 2-0 lead with goals by Wil Duffy and Jack Duncan-Bloom in the first three minutes of the game before the Dolphins responded with two goals to match the score. Simon Moore then beat the buzzer at the end of the first quarter to give the lead back to VMI at 3-2.

Led by a hat trick by VMI's Austin English in the second period, the Keydets built a 6-4 lead before Le Moyne scored twice in the final two minutes of the half to knot the score at 6-6 at the break.

English scored his fourth goal of the game midway through the third quarter to give VMI the lead back at 7-6 before Nate Golding made the score 8-7 with a goal with 38 seconds remaining before the final period.

The Dolphins scored three unanswered goals over the course of the fourth quarter to build a 10-8 lead over VMI. Despite a late goal by senior Luke Rusterucci with 15 seconds left in regulation, the Keydets won the final face-off but were unable to put another in the net as Le Moyne earned the hard-fought victory.

VMI Head Coach James Purpura
"Obviously, not the result we wanted. Credit to our opponent as they played hard and found a way to win a tight game. We made a few too many mistakes and ultimately it cost us today. The biggest factor on the day was shooting. Today we didn't shoot the ball well enough. They did and the result showed. We generated more than enough looks but didn't capitalize enough on them on offense.

"Defensively, we had a few careless mistakes that ended up in the back of the net. We had some really good moments as well with multiple possessions ending in shot clock violations. It was a great start to the year, but we are concerned with what's in front of us. Dropping our conference opener puts us behind the eight ball, but we still have six more games and I'm confident we will learn from this game and continue to improve."

Key Stats
*English finished with four goals to lead VMI in scoring
*Despite being held to one goal, Rusterucci registered four assists on the day
*VMI goalie Damian Levin tallied nine saves on the afternoon while Le Moyne's Lucas Winger earned the win with 10 saves in a complete game
