VMI closes regular season hosting Samford, Chattanooga

LEXINGTON, Va. - The VMI basketball team looks to make a return to the win column following two tough losses last week as the Keydets prepare to host league leaders Samford and Chattanooga Thursday and Saturday, respectively, at Cameron Hall.
 
Thursday's game with Samford is sponsored by the Lexington Chamber of Commerce and Saturday's game versus the Mocs will be Senior Day for cadet-athletes Cooper Sisco and KC Etienne. Saturday's game is also a promotion for Autism Speaks Coaches Powering Forward and VMI's coaching staff will sport lapel pins supporting the cause of autism research.

About Samford (21-8, 11-5)
Closing its regular season with two games on the road, the Bulldogs enter Thursday's contest coming off a 93-72 Senior Day win at home over visiting Western Carolina to stay in the race for the top seed going into the SoCon Tournament. Facing some of the top teams in the league, Samford has lost three of its past five conference games coming into this week.
 
Trey Fort leads the team in points at 14.4 per outing and shoots 39 percent from 3-point range as he has knocked down 72 for the season. Jaden Brownell ranks second on the squad with 13.6 ppg. Guard Rylan Jones leads the SoCon in assists with 152 for the year.
 
About Chattanooga (21-8, 13-3)
The hottest team in the league right now with nine consecutive conference wins, the Mocs look to finish the regular season with their winning streak intact with games this week at UNCG and VMI.
 
The Mocs distribute their scoring as four average double figures led by Honor Huff at 14.2 ppg. Bash Wieland averages 14.0 ppg and Trey Bonham is third at 13.6 ppg. Frank Champion ranks among the league leaders in blocks with 25 on the season and Bonham has logged 39 steals on the year.
 
All-Time Series History vs. Samford (5-21)
In a series dating back to 1967, the Keydets and Bulldogs have squared off 26 times with Samford claiming victory in 21 of them, including six consecutive wins to date. VMI last tasted victory over the Bulldogs on January 20, 2022, a 99-80 win at Cameron Hall.
 
All-Time Series History vs. Chattanooga (16-53)
In a series dating back to 1977, VMI and Chattanooga have squared off many times as longtime members of the Southern Conference.
