VMI tops Hampton with school record 28 goals

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI lacrosse team put eight goals up in the opening period and never looked back as the Keydets cruised to a 28-4 victory over visiting Hampton University on a cold Tuesday night at Drill Field #2.

The 28 goals is a new school record as the Keydets previously owned a high of 26 goals set against Virginia Tech in 1989, Greensboro College in 1991 and Virginia Wesleyan in 1992.  On the flip side, the four goals allowed ties for the fourth lowest amount in program history.

VMI was led by senior Luke Rusterucci and junior Austin English, who both scored seven goals apiece to pace the Keydets to victory. English finished with 10 points  - third most all-time for a single game in program history – and his seven goals ties for third most all-time for a single game.

All seven of Rusterucci's goals were scored in the opening half before VMI put on the brakes in the second.

Game Summary
*The Keydets scored eight goals in both the first and second periods to go into the halftime break with a commanding 16-1 lead
*VMI added 10 goals in the third period before slowing down in the fourth period and putting in just two more to finish the game

VMI Head Coach James Purpura
"I'm proud of our guys for coming out firing from the start and ready to go from the first whistle. This was a total team effort. Every healthy player got playing time and gained valuable experience. It started at the face off X. We put a lot of emphasis this week at that position and with our wing play.

"We picked up tough groundballs and secured a lot of possessions. Offensively, we shared the ball and had a lot of guys contribute. Our attack of Luke Rusterucci, Austin English and Dayton Bagwell all had big days. Really proud of our captain, Diego Markie, for going in and scoring his first two career goals. We had a lot of depth scoring. Our defense did a great job with some early stops and did a good job of clearing the ball.

"I thought we rode very well. A lot of younger guys were able to gain valuable experience. We will look at the tape and clean up some of the mistakes that we made. We've got a quick turnaround and hit the road this weekend to continue our out-of-conference schedule."
