Keydets drop SoCon road game to UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The VMI basketball team kept pace with host UNCG for the opening minutes of the first half, but the Spartans gradually pulled away en route to an 80-54 victory over the Keydets Wednesday night at First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina.
 
A TJ Johnson three-pointer at the 15:42 mark of the opening half gave VMI an early 12-11 advantage, but the lead was short-lived as the Spartans hit a pair of buckets and three treys by Donovan Atwell and Joryam Saizonou to give UNCG a 24-12 lead at the 11:58 mark of the period.
 
The Spartans took off from there to eventually build a 52-23 advantage at halftime. The Keydets showed fight in the second half and outscored the Spartans by a 31-28 margin over the final 20 minutes, but the game was too far out of reach for the Keydets to make a full recovery.
 
Key Stats
*Augustinas Kiudulas led the Keydets with 13 points on the night followed by 12 from junior Rickey Bradley, Jr.
* TJ Johnson hit a pair of threes during the game and finished with eight points for VMI
* The Keydets struggled shooting throughout the contest resulting in a 35 percent (17-48) mark from the field and 7-23 from three-point range (30 percent)
* 17 Keydet turnovers on the night resulted in 23 direct points in transition for UNCG
* Atwell finished with a game-high 17 points for the Spartans followed by Ronald Polite III with 13
* The Spartans scored 38 points in the paint with a strong inside presence
