VMI comes up short at Stetson

DeLAND, Fla. – The VMI basketball team battled hard but could not overcome a barrage of Stetson three-pointers as the Hatters pulled away for a 99-80 victory over the Keydets Saturday night at the Edmunds Center.
 
Stetson logged a school-record 21 three-pointers in the win to improve to 3-3 on the season while the Keydets fall to 3-4 overall.
 
Game Summary
The Keydets got behind by 10 points early on but caught up to tie it at 21-21midway through the opening half. Stetson started rolling again to pull ahead by 13, 42-29, with two minutes before the break but VMI battled back to pull with six at the half, 44-38, to go in halftime with momentum. Walker Andrews hit three treys for VMI in the first half, but Stetson's Alex Doyle countered with three of his own and Jamie Phillips, Jr., totaled 18 points in the first 20 minutes.
 
The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Hatters again earned a double-digit lead at 50-38 at the 18:47 mark and Stetson gradually pulled away to earn the win.
 

 
Key Stats
*TJ Johnson led VMI with 20 points on the night on six field goals including two treys
*Andrews (15), AJ Clark (12) and Mario Tatum, Jr. (10) also finished in double figures. Clark finished the game with his second career double-double as he also totaled 11 board during the contest
*Ethan Copeland and Alex Doyle each had seven threes for Stetson to account for two-thirds of the Hatters' 21 threes
*Copeland (25), Doyle (24) and Phillips, Jr. (21) all finished with 20+ points to fuel the Hatters
*Despite the loss, VMI had more points from turnovers (13-11), points in the paint (38-28), bench points (32-16) and tied in second-chance points (13-13)
