Swaim’s walk-off blast caps off Senior Day doubleheader

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Baseball (27-28, 7-14 SoCon) split its Senior Day doubleheader versus Western Carolina (28-24, 13-8 SoCon) Friday at Lamore Field at Gray-Minor Stadium to complete the 2024 regular season.

The Keydets took a tumble in the first game, 16-6, before striking back in game two against the Catamounts, 9-8, in walk-off fashion. VMI's 27th victory is tied for the fifth-most in program history. The Keydets await the final seeding for the Southern Conference Championship next week in Greenville, South Carolina.
 
Game 1 Key Stats
- Kazuya Jordan went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run
- Ty Swaim recorded a pair of runs
- Trey Morgan extended his on-base streak to an even 40 games
- Grayson Fitzwater smoked a two-RBI homer
- Keydets stole five bags
 

Game 1 Scoring Summary
- Starke forced in the first run of the game to make it 1-0
- WCU picked up a run in the second before Starke added another RBI, this time a single to score Swaim
- Catamounts retaliated with a pair of runs to take a 3-2 advantage until Brett Cook singled in the tying run in the fourth inning
- WCU went on a scoring spree, plating six Catamounts from the fifth through eighth innings
- VMI got one back after Jordan singled through the left side to make it 9-4
- In the ninth, WCU scored seven while the Keydets got a couple of runs thanks to a Fitzwater bomb
 
Game 2 Key Stats
- Ty Swaim played hero in game two, earning three hits and two runs including a walk-off home run, the first walk-off homer since April 2018
- Justin Starke launched a missile over the centerfield wall for career-hit number 273, a new VMI record
- VMI had six extra-base hits
- After singling in the seventh, Trey Morgan has now reached base in 41-straight contests
- Every Keydet got on base with eight of the nine starters recording at least one hit
- Grayson Fitzwater swiped a pair of bases
- Owen Prince scored a pair of runs
- After coming into the game in relief, Nathan Hawley picked up his fourth victory after tossing 2.1 innings
 

Game 2 Scoring Summary
- Despite giving up two early runs, VMI clawed back in the first two frames, scoring four runs off three RBI including a Prince single and Morgan sacrifice fly to make it 4-2
- Catamounts rebounded with one run but Starke followed up with a record-breaking homer
- WCU caught momentum and regained the lead in the seventh, 6-5
- Fitzwater picked up an RBI single before Morgan scored on a balk to give the Keydets the 7-6 advantage in the seventh
- Kazuya Jordan added more insurance in the eighth inning with an RBI double
- However, the Catamounts had some clutch hits in the ninth, scoring a pair to tie it at eight
- On the second pitch of the inning, Swaim launched his fourth home run of the season to walk off WCU
 

Next Up for the Keydets
- Keydets await the official bracket for the 2024 SoCon Championship
- VMI entered the final weekend as the seventh seed and would play Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Greenville, South Carolina depending on tomorrow's league games
