Slow start plagues VMI Baseball in loss to JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison got the best of VMI Baseball with an 8-4 final Tuesday behind a five-run first inning from the Dukes.
 
After VMI went scoreless to begin the game, three of JMU's first four batters reached off of starter Jaxon Lloyd, including Mason Dunaway, who knocked home two runs with a double. Two infield errors by VMI prolonged the inning, allowing three more unearned runs to score.
 
VMI scrapped together two runs in the top of the third and two more in the eighth, but it wasn't enough to get past JMU.
 
Key Stats:
-The VMI bullpen consisting of Nathan Hawley, Caden Plummer, Evan Parmer and Nolan Williamson threw 7.1 innings of three-run ball
-Ty Swaim recorded his second straight three-hit game
-Cole Garrett hit a two-run homer in the eighth
-Addison Clark recorded his first career hit in a 2-4 performance
- VMI outhit JMU 11-9
-The Keydets hit .111 (1-9) with two outs and .158 (3-19) with runners on
-Donovan Burke picked up the win with five strong innings of work for JMU
-Dunaway led the Dukes with three RBI
 
How it Happened:
-Owen Prince was hit by a pitch in the top of the first but was picked off to stall a rally in the top of the 1st inning
-JMU put two runners on to begin the bottom of the 1st inning with a double and walk before Dunaway's two-RBI double
-A walk and an error by Justin Starke loaded the bases before a JMU sac fly extended the lead to 3-0
-A throwing error by Brett Cook and a bloop single gave JMU a 5-0 lead
-Cole Jenkins doubled to begin the 2nd and got to third with no outs, but he was stranded
-VMI picked up two runs in the 3rd behind three consecutive singles to begin the frame
-JMU got a run back in their side of the 3rd off of an RBI triple to centerfield
-The Dukes got one run in both the 5th and 6th to extend their lead to 8-2
-VMI went scoreless and left two runners on in both the 6th and 7th innings
-Garrett cut into the deficit with his two-run homer in the 8th
-VMI loaded in the bases in the 9th, but Garrett flew out to left to end the game
