LEXINGTON, Va
. – The VMI lacrosse team defeated Queens University of Charlotte for a second year in a row as the Keydets held on to beat the Royals, 14-10, on a wet Saturday afternoon at Drill Field #2.

VMI (1-1, 0-0) got off to a fast start by jumping to a 4-1 lead after one period and cruising to a 9-2 lead by the half, but Queens (0-1) fought back in the second half to make a game of it by outscoring VMI by an 8-5 ratio and keeping the final outcome uncertain.

Game Summary
Queens struck first early in the first period, but VMI went on to score seven unanswered goals over the remainder of the quarter and midway through the second before Queens stopped the bleeding with a goal at the 6:37 mark of the second stanza. During the stretch, VMI tallied goals from AJ Stamos, two from Ty Yonas, and four more solo goals from Luke Rusterucci, Luke Mryncza, Simon Moore and Wil Duffy. Rusterucci has now scored at least one goal in 17 consecutive games.

VMI went on another run to finish the half and early in the second half with four unanswered goals by Stamos, Rusterucci, Yonas and Duffy.

Queens would go on to their eight second-half goals, including a stretch of five unanswered early in the fourth period to keep the game interesting.

VMI sophomore Austin English scored VMI's final goal with 2:00 remaining and the VMI defense clamped down to strike down every Queens scoring opportunity in the final moments.

VMI Head Coach James Purpura
"I'm so proud of our guys for earning the win. They came out ready from the start and got us going in all phases. We played complementary lacrosse and some of our defensive personnel got on the score sheet. Offensively, we continued to be well spread out with eight different goal scorers. Freshman Ty Yonas had a big game getting his first hat trick. Defensively, we played a great first half. I thought James Boynewicz was big for us playing solid defense while contributing four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Adam Norris made some big saves. Certainly, we've got to find a way to win the fourth quarter but I'm proud of our guys for finishing the game and securing the win. I'm excited to get back to work with this group and start prepping for a good High Point team."
