SALEM, Va. – VMI Wrestling had six athletes place at the Southeast Open hosted by Roanoke College at the Cregger Center on Saturday to kick off the 2024-25 season.
The Keydets earned a first-place mark out of
Patrick Jordon who went 5-0 at 149 pounds in the Freshman/Sophomore bracket. En route to his championship round, Jordon tallied a pair of decisions along with a technical fall and fall before winning the title by pinning his opponent in 2:56.
Other top performers in the FR/SO bracket included
Rob Atwood who earned fourth at 197 pounds followed by
Toby Schoffstall in fifth place. Closing out the placement finishes was
Phoenix Alyea, earning sixth place at 141 pounds.
In the open bracket,
Braxton Lewis tallied a fourth-place finish at 184 pounds. Despite going on the wrong end of a first-round decision, Lewis flipped the script and muscled his way to the third-place match, pinning No. 24 Dennis Robin out of West Virginia in 2:59 in the process.
Reigning NCAA national qualifier
Dyson Dunham picked up a sixth-place mark at 133 pounds in the open bracket, tallying a pair of falls.
VMI continues the season next weekend in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, at the Journeymen Collegiate for the two-day event. Day one will be a dual matchup against a pair of opponents with day two being an individual event.
