LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Swimming & Diving will host the Keydet Invite in Goodall Pool at the VMI Aquatic Center on Friday and Saturday. Friday's events will begin at 5 p.m. with Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
For the men, VMI had six first-place finishes against UMBC and Saint Peter's last weekend. Freshman
Stephen Russell secured first place and a new VMI top 10 time in the 1,000 freestyle (9:55.80) for a new season best followed by a victory finish in the 500 freestyle (4:49.37). Freshman
Jack Mills tallied a first-place mark and VMI top 10 time in the 200 freestyle (1:40.86) before earning first in the 100 butterfly (51.76). Sophomore
Sam Castle swam to victory in the 100 backstroke (51.44) and 200 backstroke (1:55.42) for two new season bests.
Emerson Cosner led the women's side in the pool, snapping the team and Rat records in the 200 butterfly.
Mackenzie Byrne also placed well, picking up a fifth-place mark in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 100 butterfly while
Valerie Tonnu tallied a sixth-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle. Byrne and Cosner's times made it to the VMI top 10 list.
Last weekend, the Keydets tamed the Peacocks of Saint Peter's, giving the women their first NCAA Division I dual win in nine seasons. VMI also posted triple-digit results in back-to-back weekends. With the men also earning a win over Saint Peter's, it's the first time in 10 years that both teams beat a D-I team on the same day.
Joining VMI at the Keydet Invite will be Southern Virginia University.
