Keydets fall to Mercer in SoCon home opener

LEXINGTON, Va
. – Three Keydets finished in double figures scoring but it was not enough as the visiting Mercer Bears defeated the VMI basketball team by an 86-64 count Saturday afternoon at Cameron Hall in the Southern Conference home opener for VMI.
 
Sophomore guard Taeshaud Jackson logged his ninth career double-double and fourth of the season as he finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The 13 points was just two shy of his season high.
 
Freshman center Stephen Olowoniyi registered a new season high with 14 points on the day, while fellow freshman Tyran Cook ended up with 19 points, just one shy of his season high point total.

*VMI turned the ball over 20 times during the contest, which  Mercer capitalized with 24 points off turnovers
*Mercer also made plentiful mistakes with 16 turnovers leading to 21 fast break points for VMI
*Mercer's deep supply of reserves totaled 37 points on the day led by 20 from David Thomas. Thomas and Bear teammate Jake Davis knocked down a game-high four three-pointers throughout the game
*VMI won the inside battle by tallying 38 points in the paint to Mercer's 34
*Mercer's Robby Carmody hit three treys en route to 20 points on the day as he went 7-13 from the field
