BALTIMORE, Md. – The VMI baseball team rallied for five late runs late Thursday but the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) hung on for an 8-6 non-conference win from Alumni Field.
How it happened:
The Retrievers scored seven runs in the first two innings and led 7-1 after five innings. VMI plated two in the sixth and three in the eighth to make it a two-run game but could get no closer.

Justin Starke walked in all four of his plate appearances, the first three on full counts. He also scored twice

Jed Barrett brought home VMI's first run in the third on a solo home run

Trey Morgan had two hits, including a double, and scored twice

Cole Garrett doubled and walked and
Zac Morris had two RBI
*
Tyler Kaltreider threw the last 2 2/3 innings, allowing no hits and one walk with five strikeouts
*
Marcus Van Alstine kept VMI close with four innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one run with three strikeouts
*Tony Krueger was 3-5 with three RBI for UMBC (28-24)

The two teams will meet Friday in a doubleheader at 5 p.m., both games slated for seven innings.
