Manhattan Edges VMI in Low-Scoring Contest

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. -
Ahead 5-4 at the half and going into the final quarter, the VMI lacrosse team fell by a close 8-6 score to visiting league leader Manhattan College Saturday afternoon at Drill Field #2.

The Keydets (5-7, 2-4) led for much of the game as they went ahead 2-1 after one period and were ahead 5-4 at the break. Following a scoreless third period for both squads, the Jaspers (8-3, 5-1) caught fire and found its offense in the final 15 minutes to score four goals. Manhattan also clamped down on the defensive end to allow just one VMI goals in that span to escape Lexington with a MAAC victory on the road.

VMI Head Coach James Purpura
"It's not the result we wanted, but I'm proud of the effort of our guys. Our young team showed we can go toe-to-toe with the reigning champs and a team that was receiving votes in the Top 20 earlier in the season. We just made a few too many mistakes that Manhattan was able to capitalize on. We've got to be tougher on ground balls, but our team continues to fight and learn along the way. I thought we possessed the ball well on offense. We need to capitalize on more of our chances at 6v6. I thought that was arguably our best defensive effort of the year. We played great 6v6 defense and, when we made mistakes, our freshman goalie Adam Norris was outstanding in providing saves. We were able to battle at the face off X with freshman Jack Rogers going 67 percent. This game started another three games in 7 days series so we will watch the tape, make corrections and start preparing for another conference road game."
