LEXINGTON, Va. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) baseball team defeated VMI 5-0 Friday in the first game of a three-game, non-conference series at Gray-Minor Stadium.  

How it happened:
The visiting Cougars got all the runs they would need with a five-run first inning, fueled by two home runs. The Keydets threatened in the second inning but left three runners stranded and left two more on in the eighth.

Highlights:
*Ty Swaim went 2-4 with a double and a stolen base for VMI
*Justin Starke was 2-4 and Cole Garrett doubled and walked
*Brett Cook and Zac Morris also had hits
*Ty Barker and Jack Thompson each threw three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing just two hits apiece
*Tyler Kaltreider didn't allow a hit or a walk with two strikeouts in two innings of relief
*Ole Arntson was 2-4 with a home run for SIUE (20-12)

Next Game:
VMI (18-16) and SIUE are slated for a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m. to finish the series.
