Keydets Drop Road Contest at Bellarmine

Box Score

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Trailing by a slim 4-2 margin after the first quarter, the VMI lacrosse team could not manage to keep pace with host Bellarmine as the Knights took a 17-6 victory at home Saturday afternoon at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Knights (4-1) jumped to a 3-0 lead midway through the opening period, but VMI (3-3) countered with two consecutive goals by Wil Duffy and Thomas Williamson. Bellarmine then amped up its defensive effort and shut out the Keydets the remainder of the first quarter and the entire second quarter while adding five goals of their own to increase the advantage to 9-2 over the Keydets at the half.

VMI played strong in the third period and matched Bellarmine's goals by a 2-2 count as Luke Rusterucci and Duffy put in scores for the Keydets. VMI could not cut into the deficit further, however, as the Knights opened the fourth quarter with five unanswered goals.

Owen Houston and Hartley Jordan put in two more goals for VMI midway through the final stanza, but the Knights finished out the contest on top.

VMI Head Coach James Purpura
"Credit to Bellarmine. They were the better team today. They dominated the time of possession starting at the face off X and on ground balls. We didn't play a complete 60 minutes and we will need to in order to compete in conference play. I was happy to see Wil Duffy step up and score his first two goals of his career after stepping into a starting role. We finish up going .500 in our out-of-conference schedule. There's plenty to continue to improve on being one the youngest teams in the nation. I love our guys' hunger to continue to learn and get better every day. A lot of our young guys played valuable minutes, especially with some of the injuries we've dealt with. The second season starts now entering conference play and we need to continue to remain humble and hungry entering MAAC play."
